Professor Avishai Dekel was one of the world’s most influential cosmologists, a scientist whose ideas fundamentally reshaped our understanding of galaxy formation and the large-scale structure of the universe. A central figure at the Racah Institute of Physics at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, he combined deep physical intuition with analytical clarity, leaving a legacy that spans more than four decades of groundbreaking research.
Avishai’s scientific contributions were both wide-ranging and transformative. He played a key role in establishing the ΛCDM paradigm and clarifying the role of dark matter in cosmic structure formation. He pioneered the concept of cold gas streams fueling massive galaxies at high redshift and made foundational advances in understanding feedback processes—including stellar, supernova, and AGN-driven effects—that regulate galaxy growth. These insights form the backbone of modern models of galaxy formation and have guided the interpretation of cosmological simulations and large observational surveys worldwide.
Avishai was exceptionally prolific, ranking among the top ten most cited researchers at the Hebrew University across all disciplines. His work continues to shape the trajectory of theoretical and observational cosmology. Within the Hebrew University, Avishai served as Chair of the Racah Institute of Physics (1997-2001), strengthening its academic vitality and research direction. Nationally, he served as Head of the Israel Physics Society (IPS, 2008-2011), helping to guide the development of physics in Israel and to promote collaboration across the country’s research institutions.
Avishai was deeply committed to the people around him. He built lasting relationships with colleagues and students, fostering an atmosphere of trust, intellectual openness, and shared purpose. His ability to form personal connections and meaningful collaborations was as impressive as his scientific contributions. Many who worked with him recall not only his insight, but his generosity, attentiveness, and genuine interest in the success of others.
His excellence was recognized through numerous honors, including the Landau Prize for Arts and Sciences (2020) and election to the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities (2019). These distinctions reflect the global impact of his work and his leadership within the scientific community.
Avishai’s passing is a profound loss. His scientific legacy, and the human legacy he forged through the relationships he nurtured, will continue to guide and inspire the astrophysics community for many years to come.

פרופ׳ אבישי דקל היה מן הקוסמולוגים המשפיעים ביותר בעולם, מדען שרעיונותיו עיצבו מחדש את הבנתנו של היווצרות הגלקסיות ואת מבנה היקום. דקל, דמות מרכזית במכון רקח לפיזיקה באוניברסיטה העברית בירושלים, שילב תובנה פיזיקלית עמוקה עם בהירות אנליטית, והותיר אחריו מורשת מחקרית המשתרעת על פני יותר מארבעה עשורים של פריצות דרך מדעיות.
תרומותיו המדעיות של אבישי היו רחבות היקף ומכוננות. הוא מילא תפקיד מפתח בביסוס מודל ה־ΛCDM ובהבהרת תפקידו של החומר האפל ביצירת המבנה הקוסמי. הוא היה מחלוצי הרעיון של זרמי גז קרים המזינים גלקסיות מסיביות ביקום המוקדם, ותרם תרומות יסוד להבנת תהליכי המשוב — הנגרמים על ידי כוכבים, סופרנובות ו־AGN — המווסתים את צמיחת הגלקסיות. תובנות אלו מהוות את אבן היסוד של המודלים המודרניים להיווצרות גלקסיות, ומנחות את פרשנותן של סימולציות קוסמולוגיות ושל סקרים תצפיתיים גדולים ברחבי העולם.
אבישי היה חוקר פורה במיוחד, ונמנה עם עשרת החוקרים המצוטטים ביותר באוניברסיטה העברית בכלל התחומים. עבודתו ממשיכה לעצב את דרכה של הקוסמולוגיה התאורטית והתצפיתית. באוניברסיטה העברית שימש אבישי כיו״ר מכון רקח לפיזיקה (2001–1997), ועיצב את כיוונה המחקרי והאקדמי. ברמה הלאומית כיהן כראש האגודה הישראלית לפיזיקה (IPS, 2011–2008), ותרם להובלת תחום הפיזיקה בישראל ולקידום שיתופי פעולה בין מוסדות המחקר בארץ.
אבישי היה מחויב עמוקות לאנשים סביבו. הוא יצר קשרים ארוכי טווח עם עמיתים ותלמידים, וטיפח אווירה של אמון, פתיחות אינטלקטואלית ומחויבות משותפת. יכולתו ליצור קשרים אישיים ושיתופי פעולה משמעותיים הייתה מרשימה לא פחות מהישגיו המדעיים. רבים מעידים כי לצד תובנותיו החדות, בלטו נדיבותו, הקשב שלו וההתעניינות הכנה שלו בהצלחתם של אחרים.
הצטיינותו זיכתה אותו בשורה של כיבודים, ובהם פרס לנדאו לאמנויות ולמדעים (2020) ובחירתו לאקדמיה הלאומית הישראלית למדעים (2019). כיבודים אלה משקפים את השפעתו העולמית ואת מנהיגותו בקהילה המדעית.
פטירתו של אבישי היא אבידה עמוקה. מורשתו המדעית, והמורשת האנושית שטיפח בקשריו ובמעשיו, ימשיכו להנחות ולהשריש השראה בקהילת האסטרופיזיקה עוד שנים רבות.
