Abstract:
Perhaps the most basic mystery of
AdS/CFT is how a theory in d dimensions
can be equivalent to a theory in d+1 (or
higher) dimensions. In this talk I will present
several algebraic paradoxes that sharpen
this puzzle, and then explain how they can
be resolved via the theory of quantum error
correction. In their resolution it is essential
that one side is gravitational while the other
is not. This leads to a new interpretation of
AdS/CFT as a quantum error correcting
code, with the algebra of bulk effective field
theory being realized only on a protected
subspace of states. I will present an exactly
soluble discrete model of the
correspondence that illustrates these ideas
explicitly.
