Throwing identical spheres into a container gives a disordered arrangement - random close packing - with a well-defined density. While lattice packings admit simple definition, disordered structures are more subtle. I will propose a method by which random close packing can be defined unambiguously through a simple dynamic model which reveals interesting features not previously appreciated
