Abstract:
The mechanical properties of a knit differ drastically from those of the thread of which it is made and depend on three main ingredients: the elasticity of the thread, the topology of the stitch and friction at contact points. The purpose of this talk will be to develop some phenomena that emerge from the coupling between these ingredients. Firstly, we will focus on the elasticity of the structure using traction experiments on a model-knit from which we develop a simple mechanical model. In a second step, we will be interested in the fluctuations of the mechanical response whose origin is the friction of the thread which prevents its sliding in the stitch until a single contact slips abruptly, then triggering a succession of slips .
