Abstract:
Improvement of particle acceleration using high intensity lasers have become the focus of intense research in the high field and plasma physics communities. The objective of this kind of work is to produce a compact, low cost, “university size “accelerators for the use of basic research in different fields and for the industry use. A ground-breaking application is the proton accelerator for medical usage, especially for the use of hadron cancer therapy. Such a compact accelerator will be cheaper than existing technologies, and might increase the availability of these kinds of treatments worldwide. I will present new theoretical and experimental aspects of laser to ion beam energy conversion efficiency, and possible ways to increase the maximal ion energy, pre-plasma formation and enhanced laser absorption by designing novel targets.
