Title: Core-collapse Supernova Theory: Successes and Perspectives

Abstract:

Supernova explosions terminate the lives of massive stars, produce and disseminate a major fraction of the  heavy elements, and give birth to neutron stars and black holes. Their explosions can be triggered by energy  transfer through neutrino heating, magnetorotational effects, or a hadron-quark phase transition in high-mass  neutron stars, which tap the thermal, rotational, or gravitational energy reservoir of the new-born compact  remnant. Recent 3D simulations have confirmed the viability of these mechanisms and, in particular, have  shown that neutrino-driven explosions can explain the morphological and chemical asymmetries observed in  supernovae, supernova remnants, and in the form of neutron star kicks. The talk will review these results with  a special eye on neutrinos and their diagnostic potential to reveal the dynamical processes and  thermodynamic conditions in the supernova core. Frontiers of the field are connected to the problem of  neutrino-flavor oscillations and the question which stellar populations explode by dint of an important role of  rotation and magnetic fields.
