High Energy Astrophysics Seminar - Oliver Jennrich (esa) - "Gravitational waves from space"

Thu, 07/01/2021 - 13:00 to 14:00

Title: Gravitational waves from space

After the success of the ground-based gravitational wave detectors like LIGO, Virgo and Kagra, the next challenge is to detect low-frequency gravitational waves with a space-borne detector. Many decades in the planning, the LISA mission is currently pursued by ESA and NASA and will open a new freqeuncy range for gravitational wave astronomy. The frequency range between 0.1 mHz to 1 Hz is rich in sources, both local to our galaxy and througout the universe and LISA will help to address questions on the structure formation in the universe, the morphology of the galaxy and test General Relativity in extreme conditions. LISA is currently planned to launch in 2034
