Ttitle:
Hamiltonian methods in pulsar research and gravitational wave astronomy
Abstract:
The talk is based on general relativity in hamiltonian form. Perfect fluid
models and models for compact objects with proper rotation and rotational
deformation are treated. Within the setting of the post-Newtonian
approximation scheme, explicit analytic expressions for hamiltonians are
presented. For binary systems, orbital periods, periastron advances, and
innermost stable circular orbits are derived. Analytic solutions for the
relativistic motion of binaries are given. Emission and backreaction of
gravitational waves are treated. Implications for pulsar research and
gravitational wave astronomy are discussed.
