Abstract:  The high degree of controlavailable over individual atoms holds a great promise to harness quantumsystems for improved computation, metrology and sensing. In the first part ofthe talk I will present the application of a trapped ion quantum system in precision tests of fundamental physical concepts. In search for physics beyondthe standard model we performed a precision test of Local Lorentz Invariance(LLI) for the electron. Using a trapped ion system we were able to improve thebounds on the violation of LLI for electrons and show how precisionmeasurements can be improved using tools from quantum information. Weexplicitly demonstrate the advantage from entanglement on a precision testreaching the quantum projection noise limit set by quantum mechanics. Underspecific conditions, multipartite entangled states may yield substantialfurther improvements.

In the second part of thetalk I will describe our efforts in developing the technological enablers toscale the trapped ion systems.  This effort involves scalable traps, integrated control and noise mitigation.
