Title: Quantum information science using trapped ions"

Abstract:  The high degree of control available over individual atoms holds a great promise to harness quantum systems for improved computation, metrology and sensing. In the first part of the talk I will present the application of a trapped ion quantum system in precision tests of fundamental physical concepts. In search for physics beyond the standard model we performed a precision test of Local Lorentz Invariance(LLI) for the electron. Using a trapped ion system we were able to improve the bounds on the violation of LLI for electrons and show how precision measurements can be improved using tools from quantum information. We explicitly demonstrate the advantage from entanglement on a precision test reaching the quantum projection noise limit set by quantum mechanics. Under specific conditions, multipartite entangled states may yield substantial further improvements.

In the second part of the talk I will describe our efforts in developing the technological enablers to scale the trapped ion systems.  This effort involves scalable traps, integrated control and noise mitigation.
