Abstract:
In 1972 Jacob Bekenstein argued that a
black hole has an entropy proportional to the
area of its event horizon. Finding the
microscopic origin of this entropy has been
a focal point of physics for the intervening
44 years.
Recent progress on this problem will be
described.
