Title: Speculating on the origin and future of FRBs

Abstract: Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are subsecond-duration transients whose precise origins remain a mystery. A subset of FRBs is known to repeat; a subset of those is known to repeat in periodic activity windows. In my talk I will review the short but exciting history of these fast transients. I will also share new results from Apertif in the Netherlands on the 16-day-periodic FRB 180916 and discuss the implications on emission mechanism and progenitor environment. I will conclude by speculating on where the field is going in the 2020s, focussing on FRB applications such as gravitational lensing.
