Abstract:
The majority of biophysical research incorporates physics methodologies to advance our understanding of biological systems. In this talk I will take an inverse direction, arguing that insights from biology can assist in addressing a fundamental problem in physics, namely: The sustainability of a complex system under ongoing challenge of perturbations that are combinatorially novel. I will discuss a conceptual problem in thinking about this only in terms of an evolvable self-reproducible automata and describe work-in-progress to evaluate an alternative approach inspired by insights from living organisms. If time permits, I will describe a preliminary (and rather speculative) framework, aiming to represent basic notions of living organisms as features of self-organizing dynamical systems.
