Astrophysics Seminar: "Theory of atmospheric scintillation"

Date:
Tue, 18/04/201712:30-13:30
Location:
Kaplun building, Room No. 200
Lecturer: Dr. Guillaume Molodij Affiliation: Weizmann Institute of Science Abstract: Turbulence-induced scintillation results in power losses at the receiver and eventually fads of the received signal below a detectable threshold. One of the goals in studying optical wave propagation through atmospheric turbulence has been the identification of tractable models for the irradiance under all irradiance fluctuation conditions. The strong turbulence theory is far from complete, and many statistical quantities of optical fields that are well understood in weak turbulence have not yet been addressed by strong turbulence theory. I will review the effects of intensity scintillation in the terrestrial atmospheric turbulence as well as the scattering of radio waves in the interstellar medium.
