Title : Binary compact objects mergers across cosmic times

Recent detections of gravitational waves from merging binary black holes and neutron stars allow to study the distribution of masses and spins of these objects, as well as their merger rates in the local Universe. However, the merger rates of binaries in different environments, in particular low-metallicity high-redshift galaxies, remain unconstrained. In this talk I will discuss indirect ways to study these populations, focusing on the yet to be detected stochastic gravitational-wave background from unresolved sources and the abundance of r-process elements, that can be produced in binary neutron star mergers. In particular, I will present our recent results that show that merging binary neutron stars can be the dominant source of r-process elements in the Universe.
