Title: New Paradigms of Circumbinary Accretion

Abstract: Recently, the impact that circumbinary disks have on accreting supermassive black hole binaries has been significantly reassessed. Whether disks promote or inhibit binary coalescence is now being hotly debated, upending a decades-long paradigm of binary migration, and potentially introducing a radical change into the predicted merger rate of supermassive black holes.  I will provide an overview of these recent results, describing why circumbinary disks can promote binary softening, and explaining why this phenomenon was missed by earlier studies.
